Oriole’s nest and the Gopher Snake

There is more to this than meets the eye. First of all, we noticed Cowbirds hanging around this season. They are known to lay their eggs in Oriole’s nests. A bit of a pesky and invasive bird. That being said, we may have lost Cowbird babies and not Orioles. Not sure we will ever know. The Orioles put up a big fight and dived at the snake. Even a House Finch joined in and some other Orioles… it was quite a scene. Hard to watch but I had to witness nature at work. It was especially hard as I saw the snake climb the Giant Bird of Paradise and knew he was headed for the nest. I come not to get involved and let nature take its course.

      Intense. Pretty for the snake who was hungry. Not so pretty for the Cowbird or Orioles
